I am a life
member of the American Physical Society (one of the member societies of
AIP). Shortly after the firing I wrote
a letter to the Society protesting Schmidt's unseemly removal. The reply I got stated that the AIP had
"good reasons" other than the book, but since this was a
"personnel matter" they were not at liberty to explain them. I must agree the answer seemed evasive, and
I am glad others have picked up the cause.
