Dear Dr. Brodsky:

I just received the presumably widely distributed email, "speech rights," telling of the firing of Jeff Schmidt by Physics Today connected with his book Disciplined Minds. Although the case against Physics Today sounds pretty bad, having heard only one side of a perhaps complex story, I withhold judgment. But it (the case — or even the email itself) is a serious issue. I await an American Physical Society response.

I feel strongly because I identify with the APS and am generally proud of my Society. I have participated in meetings at One Physics Ellipse to improve our discipline; I respond to many of your calls for political action; I contribute annually; and, incidentally, I am a fellow of the Society.
