One of the enduring scientific and political controversies associated with nuclear power has been the issue of the health risks of low-level ionising radiation. Charles Sutcliffe, an economist, has delved into the scientific evidence. His book is clearly written, reasonably accessible to non-specialists, well organised and well documented for its stated purpose, namely presenting the case that official estimates considerably understate the risks of low-level ionising radiation. Sutcliffe is mainly concerned to mobilise conventional science to argue a point, except in one effective chapter where he gives numerous examples of how the nuclear establishment has obstructed critics of radiation standards.
