A citizen advocate is a valued and competent citizen who freely chooses to enter a relationship with a person with a disability, called a protégé, to understand, respond to and represent the protégé's interests as if they were their own. Advocates should be unpaid and free from conflict of interest.
Citizen Advocacy programmes recruit, orient and match people with disability with advocates and support these relationships over time.
